Fantastic Mr. Fox is American stop-motion animated comedy film in 2009, based on a children novel of the same name, directed by Wes Anderson. The story is about a fox who steals food each night from three different wealthy and mean farmers. They fed up with Mr. Fox and try to kill him, so they dig their way into foxes home, but foxes and other animals are able to outwit those farmers and live underground.
In this film, the color tint for almost every scenes are orange-yellow, it gives me a sense of warm. I feel that might be a hint of good person.
When it comes to the three wealthy and means farmer, the background and props changed.
For the first farmer, Boggis they show, it still has the orange-yellow sky. The house at the back shows there is 4 floors for this house, and there is some separate part. This can show how rich he is. This scene is full of straight lines and squares. Even the two little houses at each side of screen, there is combination of squares (windows) and straight lines (wall). Included the big word (BOGGIS) on the upper part of scene, is the font of san serif, with sharp edges.
This is the second farmer, Bunce. Same goes to the first farmer, the name behind (BUNCE) uses san serif font – a typeface that have a serious sense. The house is full of squares. The trees at the sides of screen are without any leaves, enhance the means feeling of farmer.
The last farmer, Bean. This is more and more means sense compares to the previous farmers. We know that, the four pillars at the back are pasted his name with 4 letters on 4 pillars. The thorns of corns make the house looks like there is a pair of demon ears on it. Color tint in this scene is more to red, enhance sense of devil. It can tell that, Bean is the most mean among the three farmers.
This is the other scene of introducing him. The wall at the back hangs over of the horn of animals, matching with the narrator’s word: …possibly the scariest man currently living. Telling that Bean is the ruthless farmer.
Talking another characters – Fox’s son and nephew, Ash and Kristofferson. Ash dislikes Kristofferson, because he feels that Fox is more toward to Kristofferson. Kristofferson can do everything better than him, even his lab partner and coach always give compliment on Kristofferson.
In this scene, they are going to bed. Ash is not preparing a nice sleeping place for Kristofferson. From this scene, we can feel that Kristofferson has only a limited place to stand while Ash occupy half of the screen. The other thing is, Kristofferson’s body gesture. He holds his hands at the front of him body, it shows his feeling of wronged. On the other side, Ash looks at him at the high angle, just like telling him, “Whatever you say, I will not consider.”
But then, Ash is a good kid. After they lie down and sleep, Kristofferson cries. Ash hears crying sound and tries to comfort him, he plays his train toy. This scene here, their position spaces exchanged. It shows that Ash tries let go of his dislike and accompany Kristofferson.
