Amelie (known as Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain) is a French romantic comedy film that directed by Jean Pierre-Jeunet in 2001, produced by Jean-Marc Deschamps and Claudie Ossard. Starring with Audrey Tautou and Mathieu Kassovitz. It is a story about a girl named Amelie, a shy waitress who decides to change the lives of those around her for the better while struggling with her own isolation.

In this blog posts, we will analyze the cinematography of the film, and discuss how it gives meaning to the film. Cinematography included different aspects, like, film techniques, lighting, depth of field and camera movement. It helps to enhance the film meaning and feeling. Directors are willing to use cinematography as a guide to make a film. Different techniques can bring out a different sense of a film.

Most of the time, the director used an unusual angle or lighting to contribute the story. The way the story develops is weird because some of the characters’ actions and ideas are unusual, and makes the audience is not used to that behavior and thoughts. For example, Amelie talks to the camera like she is talking to the audience. Sometimes, the narrator is narrating her minds and questions; and she will answer to the camera.

Another example is, Amelie shows to the camera how she makes a new letter that get different words from different papers.

First of all, we will discuss the lighting. It is the most obvious thing to see. In the film, the lighting is more preferable to greenish light. No matter the interior or exterior, the lighting is greenish all the way in the film and not so bright that create an unreal environment. Greenish brings a sense of unusual, as for the Amelie, she isolated from society for nearly 18 years, because her parents incorrectly believing that she has a heart defect, they decide to homeschool her. So, she develops herself with an active imagination and mischievous personality to cope with her loneliness.

Next will be discussing is the zoom in the shot for the film. I found out an interesting fact, is that the zoom in the shot is not just zoomed in. The way they moved the camera towards the object or focus point, is slowly moved the camera and at the same time, they moved it with a turn of 180 degrees. This camera movement works perfectly and makes the zoomed in shot not too dull, and show the environment and setting more to the audience.

Another remarkable idea in the film is the eye looks shot. When the characters are using the telescope, the scene will change to the view of the telescope – like audience can feel they are seeing through the characters’ eyes, and the director also make it be more realistic, the eye looks are a bit shaky, because human’s hand are unstable if they are in a relaxed state. Apart from that, the scenes are in a circular mode to show it is through a telescope.

Although this is a real world, sometimes it has some cartoon together with real people. First is the little Amelie is helping a monster to do a body check, and then a man in the photo is talking to the guy. These scenes had added some funny elements to the film.
