3 Idiots

3 Idiots is a coming-of-age comedy-drama film directed
and written by Rajkumar Hirani, a 2009 Indian film. Starring Aamir Khan as
Rancho, R. Madhavan as Farhan, Sharman Joshi as Raju. The film follows the
friendship of three students at an engineering college, and it reflects about the
social pressures under an Idian education system. The film narrated through
parallel dramas, one in the present and the other 10 years in past.
Asian cinema is a site or space encounters many ideas,
philosophies and religions. From there encounters, it evolves a universe of its
own. Bollywood is the most representative form of “popular Indian cinema”. It refers
to a specific style of filmmaking. It also influenced by Hinduism, but
pleasures of spectacle and immersive experience. It also adopting Hindi as its
language.
The language in 3 Idiots is mixing English and Hindi. There
is a scene that a student who eager to do well in everything, is speaking full English
sentence to Rancho. Then, the senior next to him ask him to speak in Hindi. Later
in the film, the student speak English and mixing with Hindi.
In the beginning of the film, Farhan introduces himself,
and said that “My fate was sealed. What I wanted to be…no one asked.”
This reflected
the society nowadays, parents always expecting their kid to become what they
want, higher position like doctor, engineering and etc. And most of the parents
think that, they choose a better path and future for their kid. They never
think that they maybe stressed on their kid, and walk to a path of no return.
The film also shows the religion. After Farhan gets to
his hostel, his roommate, Raju is a devout palmer. He prays for everything – especially
his result in school.
Another part on religion, our main female character, Pia.
She has a fiancé, even though he is a well-educated Indian man, wearing
fashionable clothing, but his wedding still following the traditional rules.
The philosophies in the film are mainly on the education
issues. People learn and accept the new knowledge in school, but only studied
it, never applied it. People mechanically memorize the formula, never thorough understand
it. The film also shows how the teachers teach in the school – remember the definition
on text books, never accept the new ideas. The knowledge is very important, we
should learn and apply elastically depend on the notice in our daily life.
Last and no least, the film is a Bollywood film, which
means the singing and dancing part. What I like about the dancing part is, the
settings are related to our society issues. The dancers are keeping on holding a
book. And it twists the happy phenomena as they accidentally find out there is
a senior commit suicide.
In the conclusion, 3 Idiots worth to let people ponder
their way of educating. The film was the highest grossing film and had the highest
opening day collection for an Indian film. The film had social impact on
attitudes to education in Asia.
