Run Lola Run (Lola rennt) is a German thriller film in 1998, written and directed by Tom Tykwer. Starring Franka Potente and Moritz Bleibtreu. The story is about a woman who named Lola needs to obtain 100,000 Deutsche Mark in twenty minutes to save her boyfriend, Manni’s life. Lola got a call from Manni, been told that he has to get 100,00 mark in 20 minutes, or else will die. Manni also tells Lola he is planning to rob a supermarket. Lola stops Manni and asks him to wait; she then decides to ask her dad for help. The rest of the film divides into three runs; each runs start at the same way, but develops a different process and has different outcomes.
The editing techniques in the film will be analyzed. From the beginning, the title sequence of the film is showing a clock swinger as a transition and shows a clock ticking in abnormal speed. Matching the background music, give the tension of time is not waiting for anyone. Then, it is a fast camera movement of showing the people walking, and narrating the scene. It keeps telling the human is a mystery, doubt of human existing. Apart from that, it keeps an emphasis on a game – but, life cannot be repeated.
When the film started, it shows Manni and Lola is talking on the phone. When it comes to the flashback, the scene used a black and white filter and a bit of speed up for the characters’ movement.
The film used a lot of jump cut, to enhance the tension of mistake of Manni made; the tension of making a decision; the tension of Lola is finding someone. Manni left the bag of money in a train, Lola and he keeps repeating “the bag”, then it is their helpless faces.

After Manni tells Lola he decided to rob a supermarket, she stops him and thinking who to help her, the jump cut of mid-shot of her, and repeating “who” with different facial expressions and actions.
Then, the camera moved 360 degrees when she is thinking who to ask for help, different faces of her friends and family constantly flashing, and getting faster.
In the first run, Manni and Lola have robbed the supermarket, but Lola shoot by policemen. Then, cameraclosese up to Lola’s face, and flashback to their past conversation. The second run was Manni hit by a car, and flashback again to their past conversation. After the flashback, then only “restart” the run.
There is something that I noticed after watching for few times, the things and props surrounding Manni are in yellow, while Lola are red. The scene of flashback of their past conversation, the screen is just right to fit both of them, and their symbolic colours gone. It gives me the sense of the scene is their private space, talking through their heart.
