Super 8 is
an American science fiction thriller film, written, co-produced and directed by
J. J. Abrams at 2011. It might be an interesting movie for some people. But for
me, it is not really. Still, there are some of the scenes are compelling. For
example, it is interesting that the whole movie gives the hints a little by
little. So the audience will have the will to continue to watch the movie. Some
of the scenes use thriller or horror film techniques; it combines the sound
effects and colour editing to bring out some thrill effect. The rhythm of the
movie is inconsistent. The scene that seems to be something happen is really
exciting, because the audience have to “prepare” for the scene coming. That is
really caught my eyes and my mood. But then when it comes to their daily life,
which are the characters in movie having their own film recording, it is a
little bit dull for me.
The story
is talking about the main character; Joe joined his friend, Charles for making
his film. When they are shooting their film at train station, there is an
accident happened. They saw their teacher in the accident car. When they try to
rescue their teacher, the teacher only asked them to go and warns them to
forget what they saw that night. Also, Joe found something weird. It is a cube
that made up of different little cubes. Start from that day, there is always
something strange happen. Like all the pets in the small town missing but after
that, all the missing pets had been found out at another country. Apart from
that, the electrical in the small town fluctuates and some of the town people
missing.
Firstly,
instead of talking about the scene I like the most, I would like to discuss
about the characters personality, especially Joe, the main male character and his friend, Charles. Joe
joined Charles to make a low budget zombie movie, as a makeup artist and play
a bit role. I think that Joe is a boy that particular about loyalty to friends,
while Charles only cares about what he wants. They both personality are
individuality clear-out, and it is high contrast.
Obviously, Joe is much softer than Charles. From the
way he speaks, I feel that Joe will try everything to avoid argument. Maybe because
of the reason of his mother’s death, and his father is busy about his work, he
is a little bit more mature than his friends. Besides that, he is rational too.
There is one part of the movie, Charles being honest to Joe, he has a major
crush on Alice, the main female character, but Joe would give up on Alice as
the hardships Charles and Joe had went through in their friendship. Next, when
Joe and Charles and their friends are going to save Alice, Charles asked Joe “Are
you sure you can without me?” Joe answered “Sure.” He believed in himself, and
he has confidence in himself. Another thing is, when Joe and one of his friends
went to rescue Alice who was kidnapped by the alien, he somehow managed to show
his intelligent side by planning a strategy which involves his friend being the
bait by setting up some fireworks to lure the attention of alien and giving him
the opportunity and time to save Alice.
Charles in the other hand is shaped up by the writer to
be the bossy character in between the few boys. It is due to the position of
producer, director and scriptwriter for his own movie. He is the alpha in
between the others as he is the one who stepped up among the others asking
Alice to be in his movie. There are sure to have some downsides for Charles’
personality as he tends to be to bossy at certain times when they are filming,
leaving Joe and the others hating and questioning his methods of filming. His character
caught my eyes when he keeps emphasizing “production value” as rare situations
had occur which seems to benefit his films quality. As for the good side of
Charles personality, the leadership value is strong in him as he leads his
friends out of danger when the climax of alien invasion started. Overall, I think
Charles’ personality is the one that I would look up to as a pioneer in my
fields of studies in the future.
It is very interesting that hear the climax of the movie,
both Joe and Charles liked the same person which was Alice. The twist was
Charles was not mad at Joe being close to Alice but he can feel that Alice
seems to show affection towards Joe. Although Charles is mad that the close
relationships between the two of them had affected the progress and quality in
filming the movie, this means that Charles put his work first.
By coming to a conclusion, I personally think that the
movie is not really my cup of tea. Putting critiques aside, I would give 4.5
out of 10 personally because it doesn’t make me want to get on the hype train
of this particular movie.
